Atokos Sailing Guide
Updated: September 2026Atokos (Άτοκος) is a small private island owned by the Tsakos family. Although it is private, anchoring in the island’s coves has long been tolerated by the owners, as they have no residence there and rarely visit. The island is uninhabited and offers no facilities whatsoever.
On 31/07/2025, Ithaka’s Coast Guard issued a surprising decision prohibiting navigation and anchoring within 300 metres of the island’s shore. After numerous protests, the restriction was lifted and now applies only to day-cruise ships that previously brought large numbers of visitors to the island.
Atokos Sailing Map: Anchorages and Harbours
Below is an interactive map of all major anchorages in Atokos. The most popular anchorage is One House Bay, which can accommodate many boats. Other, equally good but smaller anchorages are highlighted with red circles.
One House Bay
Approx. Pos.: 38°29.010′ N, 20°49.245′ E
Also known as “Pig’s Beach” because of the frequent visits by black pigs. They are generally calm, and no incidents have been reported; however, it is wise to keep your distance from wild animals and avoid carrying food near them.
The “one house” visible from the bay is actually a chapel dedicated to Saint John (Agios Ioannis).
The water here is crystal-clear, making swimming a delight. Spending the night offers an incredible view of the starry sky, far from city lights.
Anchor in the middle on sand and optionally run stern lines to the northern rocks. Holding is good. If you choose stern lines instead of swinging freely, the prevailing north-westerly wind will press against your anchor, but this remains the safer option since wind shifts inside the bay can cause collision risks for boats swinging freely. Swell is practically zero with the prevailing wind, but gusts of up to 25 knots are possible.
On the downside, the bay has become very popular recently, so securing a good spot may be difficult if you arrive late.
From Atokos, you can easily sail to Lefkada, Meganisi, Kalamos, Kastos, Ithaca and Kefalonia—discover them all in our Ionian sailing guide.
