Ionian Sailing Guide

Updated: September 2026

The Ionian Sea, lying to the west of mainland Greece, is a favourite destination for sailors seeking calm waters and stunning scenery. Known for its gentle winds and sheltered bays, this region offers an ideal environment for both beginners and experienced skippers. The coastline is dotted with picturesque villages, lush green landscapes, and crystal-clear waters, creating a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.

Weather in the Ionian

From May to October, the Ionian Sea offers some of the most reliable and gentle sailing conditions in Greece. The prevailing summer wind is the Maistros, a north‑westerly breeze that typically builds around midday and settles by sunset, blowing at roughly Force 3–5 during this period. Air temperatures warm steadily from about 22–26°C in May, rising to 30–34°C in July and August, before easing back to 24–28°C in September and becoming milder in October. Sea temperatures follow a similar pattern, starting at around 18–20°C in May, reaching 24–26°C in mid‑summer, and remaining comfortably warm at 22–23°C through October. The combination of warm weather, predictable afternoon breezes, and sheltered waters makes the Ionian an exceptionally comfortable sailing area throughout the entire season.
