Argo-Saronic Sailing Guide
Updated: September 2026The Argo-Saronic Gulf is one of Greece’s most rewarding cruising grounds and the sailing region closest to Athens. Combining the islands of the Saronic Gulf with the sheltered waters of the Argolic Gulf, it offers an exceptional mix of historic harbours, protected anchorages, elegant island towns, and short sailing distances. The region is home to some of Greece’s most famous destinations, including Hydra, Spetses, Poros, and Aegina, while also providing numerous quiet coves and lesser-known islands for crews seeking a more relaxed experience. The relatively short passages and generally moderate conditions make the Argo-Saronic suitable for both first-time skippers and experienced sailors.
Weather in the Argo-Saronic Gulf
From May to October, the Argo-Saronic Gulf enjoys warm temperatures, reliable weather, and generally moderate winds. Compared to the Cyclades, conditions are considerably less demanding and more forgiving for cruising yachts. The region is protected from the stronger Meltemi that affects the central Aegean, although fresh northerly winds can still occur during summer.
The prevailing summer winds are generally from the north and northwest. Mornings are often calm, with winds increasing during the afternoon before easing again after sunset. The mainland coastlines and numerous islands provide protection from fetch, helping keep sea conditions relatively manageable throughout most of the season.
